First Lady Honors Military Women, Vets

Monday, November 23, 2009 posted by admin

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18, 2009 – First Lady Michelle Obama today cited Army Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger, one of 13 killed during the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, as an example of the determination and courage that has characterized women’s service to the military throughout U.S. history.

Obama, who hosted about 130 military women and veterans to tea at the White House today, remembered Krueger’s response when her mother told her she could not track down al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden singlehandedly.

“Watch me,” replied Krueger, who enlisted in the Army after the 9/11 terror attacks.

“That phrase, ‘Watch me,” sums up the spirit of our women in uniform throughout our history,” Obama told her guests.

“When others doubted you, or dismissed you, or questioned whether you could endure the training or complete the mission, that was your response, ‘Watch me,” she said. “Watch me succeed. Watch me risk everything I have for the country I love. Watch me do my part to protect this nation and protect this union. Watch me.”

Obama joined Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, in honoring military women, many who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and others whose service dates back to World War II.

Craigslist Founder Joins VA Panel

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 posted by admin

Craig Newmark, who founded Craig’s List 14 years ago, will help the Department of Veterans Affairs improve the way it serves patients.

Newmark will serve on a panel of advisors that will review and evaluate ideas to improve disability claims processing times and improve transparency to veterans.

The VA sought input from employees and members of Veterans service organizations, and says it has received suggestions from all of its 57 regional offices. Those ideas will be reviewed by the panel, which is chaired by VA Under Secretary for Benefits Patrick Dunne.

“I look forward to working with VA’s leadership team to bring tangible results to our veterans,” said Newmark in a statement. “I am very encouraged by the fact that VA is embracing new ways to look at old problems.

VA says it has received more than 3,000 suggestions since Sept.8. The panel will review the top submissions and choose five that will be fully funded for project development and implementation at the regional office that submitted the idea.

Next LYONS NJ VAMC PTSD Visit is December 9th

Monday, November 16, 2009 posted by admin
This is an early reminder to mark your calendars to welcome the Lyons VAMC PTSD patients when they visit the Wall on Wednesday, December 9. It will be rain or shine as it has been every 6 weeks this year.
Again, we’ll meet by the benches near the 3 soldiers statue before their ETA of 1130. In addition to vets from Vietnam their group usually vets from Iraq and Afghanistan and other conflicts (male and female).
This time we will follow the routine that was used on September 16.  After they do their ceremony, they will ask whether any of the OEF and OIF vets want to go to Arlington National Cemetery. If they do, their bus will go and some of us will join them.   After a brief visit there it will return to the Wall to pick up the rest of the vets.
As we did all of the prior times, our role will be to support the program that the VA will have at The Wall by welcoming the vets and engaging them in conversation. Where it goes will depend on the needs of each patient so there is no predicting how it will be.  So far, all the visits have worked out very well and have been appreciated by those in the PTSD program.
Please wear your VVA hat, clothing, pins, etc.  Bring a camera if you desire.
Please encourage other VVA and AVVA members to be there too, as well as any other veteran’s organization members or supporters.  If you have a mailing list, please send them a blast (ditto for Facebook and the like).  Also, please reach out to other vets that you know, regardless of the conflict, especially combat vets and IOF/IEF vets.  Please feel free to send them a personal email telling them what we are doing, how it was when you went previously, etc.  December 9 is the final date for 2009.  I don’t have 2010 dates yet.

Finally, please let me know if you are going to attend.

President Obama Launches Major Veterans Employment Initiative

Friday, November 13, 2009 posted by admin

November 9, 2009

Washington, DC – Today, the White House announced the launch of an initiative that is designed to transform the federal government into the model employer of America’s veterans.  This evening, President Obama will be joined by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry to sign an Executive Order on the Employment of Veterans in the federal government, which establishes the Veterans Employment Initiative for the Executive Branch. The Initiative underscores to federal agencies the importance of recruiting and training veterans, aims to increase the employment of veterans within the Executive Branch, and helps recently hired veterans adjust to service in a civilian capacity.

“Honoring our sacred trust with America’s veterans means doing all we can to help them find work when they come home so they never feel as if the American Dream they fought to defend is out of reach for them and their families,” said President Obama. “But this initiative is about more than repaying our debt for their courageous service and selfless sacrifice.  It’s also about continuing to fill the ranks of federal employees with men and women who possess the skills, dedication, and sense of duty that Americans deserve from their public servants.  And few embody those qualities like our nation’s veterans.”

Veterans Day Message from President Obama

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 posted by admin

Today, on Veteran’s Day, my message to you is simple: Thank you. Thank you for your selfless service, for your valor, and your strength of purpose that make all of us proud to be Americans.

Today, Americans will pause amidst a great conversation about the future of our nation to take a moment and recognize your service to our democracy — a service that guarantees us all the liberty to engage freely in that conversation, no matter what our views may be.

We know that we owe you a debt which cannot be repaid. But we can and will fulfill our nation’s promise to stand by you and your loved ones. That is why we’ve worked hard for better care for our veterans, and why we provided the largest increase in Veterans Administration funding in history.

Today, we honor those Americans past and present who’ve served on battlefields from Lexington to Antietam, Normandy to Manila, Inchon to Khe Sanh, Ramadi to Kandahar. You have defended our freedom on land, and at sea, and in the air.

You reflect the diversity that makes this America. You share a patriotism beyond question. And you share the same unflinching courage, selfless compassion, and uncommon camaraderie that — when faced with the tragedy of a despicable and heartbreaking attack last Thursday — the soldiers and civilians of Ft. Hood humbly revealed to the world.

You and your loved ones are the patriotic men and women we honor today, Veterans Day. And you are the men and women we shall honor every day, in times of war and times of peace, so long as our nation endures.

Thank you.

President Barack Obama

Health Insurance Reform
DAILY MYTHBUSTER:

‘Reform Will Undermine the Health Care That Veterans and Military Families Have Now’

Health insurance reform opponents continue to spread myths – now about the recently introduced Affordable Health Care for America Act, including saying that health insurance reform will undermine the health care that veterans and military families have now.  But the facts continue to knock these myths down.

MYTH:  “Enactment of the House health insurance reform bill would undermine the health care that veterans and military families are receiving now.”

FACT:  Veterans’ health care and TRICARE (for military families) would not be impacted by passage of the Affordable Health Care for America Act.  Nothing in the bill would affect, change, or undermine the health care that veterans enrolled in VA health care and military families enrolled in TRICARE are currently receiving.

Further language has been included in the Affordable Health Care for America Act that makes clear that the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense retain full authority to operate the VA health care system and TRICARE without interference from any new organizations, agencies, or commissions established by the legislation.  In addition, specific language has been included to exempt TRICARE from the requirements of the essential benefits package and other insurance requirements.

MYTH:  “Veterans and military families enrolled in VA health care and TRICARE will be penalized for not having acceptable coverage – being forced to pay the penalty of 2.5% of adjusted income.”

FACT:  The Affordable Health Care for American Act recognizes VA health care and TRICARE as acceptable minimum coverage—so enrollees are already meeting the shared responsibility requirement and will face no fee or penalty.

Specifically, the bill contains a section that states that 1) individuals enrolled in the veterans’ health care program; and 2) individuals and dependents enrolled in TRICARE will be considered as having acceptable minimum coverage – meaning they have met the bill’s shared responsibility requirement for individuals to purchase insurance if they can afford it.  In other words, individuals enrolled in VA health care or TRICARE will never be subject to the bill’s 2.5% fee for those who choose not to purchase affordable health insurance.

MYTH:  “Enactment of the House health insurance reform bill would limit the choices that veterans, service members, and their dependents have for their health care.”

FACT:  The Affordable Health Care for America Act contains provisions that explicitly allow veterans receiving VA health care or service members and their families receiving TRICARE to also enroll in an insurance plan through the bill’s Health Insurance Exchange.  This would provide veterans and service members the opportunity to obtain additional coverage for themselves and their dependents if they desire.

This had been a key concern of many veterans’ organizations.  For example, the Disabled American Veterans had written:  “Any national health care reform legislation must make certain all veterans, including those enrolled in VA health care, remain eligible to enroll in any exchange-participating health benefits plan offered under [the bill] through the Health Insurance Exchange, or in any other public or cooperative health insurance program.”  This key objective of veterans’ organizations is fully addressed in this bill.

MYTH:  “Enactment of the House health insurance reform bill would undermine the TRICARE For Life program (health care for military retirees).”

FACT:  Just as the Affordable Health Care for America Act fully protects the current VA health care and TRICARE systems, it also fully protects the TRICARE For Life program.

There is a chain e-mail currently going around the Internet that states that the efforts of the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats on health insurance reform will result in undermining the benefits in the TRICARE For Life program for military retirees.  Once again, these charges are not true.  (The TRICARE For Life program was introduced in 2002 as a supplement to Medicare for military retirees.  It covers many medical costs not covered by Medicare.)  Just as the Affordable Health Care for America Act does nothing to affect the TRICARE program, it also has no provisions that affect the TRICARE For Life program.  The health care benefits of military retirees are fully protected.

President Proclaims Military Family Month

Monday, November 2, 2009 posted by admin

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2009 – President Barack Obama pledged his support of military members and their families and said Americans have a “solemn obligation” to preserve their well-being in his proclamation declaring November as Military Family Month.

The proclamation reads:

“No one pays a higher price for our freedom than members of our Nation’s military and their families. As sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and mothers and fathers are deployed, military families endure with exceptional resilience and courage. They provide our troops with invaluable encouragement and love, and serve our Nation in their own right. During Military Family Month, we honor the families of our Armed Forces and thank them for their dedication to our country.

“Though only a small percentage of our Nation’s population, our troops bear the great responsibility of protecting our people. They, along with their families, serve us every day with courage and dignity. Ensuring that military families receive the respect they deserve and the support they have earned is a top priority for my Administration.

“The strength of our Nation is measured not just by our success on the battlefield, but also by our ability to support those families who have made so many sacrifices for us. Time and again, military families have shown their heart in the face of adversity. We have a solemn obligation to ensure that while our men and women in uniform discharge their duties, we do all we can to promote and preserve the well-being of their families. We must also support the families of our wounded warriors and our fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy.

“This month, we celebrate the tremendous contributions of military families, convey to them our deepest respect and appreciation, and recommit ourselves to their support.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 2009 as Military Family Month. I call on all Americans to honor military families through private actions and public service for the tremendous contributions they make in the support of our service members and our Nation.”
